My husband and I moved to Santa Cruz in the early 70′s and have watched the community grow in so many ways. Besides the delights of living by the ocean, close to redwood forests, a short drive from the Monterey Peninsula and Silicon Valley, we discovered a diverse community rich in theater, music, dance and of course, education. Opportunities to become immersed in just about any interest, however obscure, exists here in this County.
Those of us who have been lucky enough to have lived here a number of years, have come to love the various communities, each special in its own way. There are the hills, forests and meandering creeks of the San Lorenzo Valley, the area around the university on the west side of Santa Cruz, and the downtown area with dignified old Victorian homes. The Boardwalk and West Cliff Drive walk along the ocean is probably the most familiar memory most people take away with them of Santa Cruz proper. Then there is the Seabright neighborhood with little beach bungalows and white picket fences, the yacht harbor with more small cottages and two restaurants right on the waters edge, Soquel with green hills and distant views of the ocean, and the Aptos hills with Nisene Marks Park. Many people are familiar from their childhood with charming Capitola by the Sea, with its colorful European style buildings known as The Venetians built right on the sand. Moving south there is Seacliff nestled on the edge of the cliffs above the reknowned Cement Ship, Rio del Mar and the golf course, and the little community of La Selva Beach. At the extremes of the county there is Scotts Valley above Pasatiempo and its respected golf club and to the south, Watsonville, the center of the agricultural industry of the county.
